Happy Canada Day!

Stompin' Tom's Musical Map of Canada

The late Stompin' Tom Connors, the fiercely proud and extremely prolific Canadian music icon, wrote and performed songs that celebrate our country from coast to coast. Though they didn't all become chart-toppers, his patriotic tunes are familiar to Canadians of all ages - who isn't able to sing along to The Hockey Song, for instance?

Delivered in his distinctive country-folk twang, Stompin' Tom's music embraces regional customs and communities, delves into historical events and cherishes the flavour of all corners of Canada.

"I don't know why I seem to be the only one, or almost the only one, writing about this country," he said in 2008. "This country is the most underwritten country in the world as far as songs are concerned. We starve. The people in this country are starving for songs about their homeland."

With this map, originally posted shortly after Stompin' Tom's death in March, CBC News dips into some of the Canadian locales Connors toasted in his music. Access the map of Canada on the CBC website using the link below, then select the red marker and click on the picture to launch the music videos for each location.
